Beijing, China

Even though it was a hot weekend in August, we went to the Beijing Zoo to see pandas.  The zoo was much bigger than we expected and the landscaping was incredible.  There were a lot of animals to see and the design of the zoo was beautiful, it almost made you forget that it is in the middle of a huge capital city in China.

The zoo trip was the first time we experienced something we had heard about before we came, that some Chinese people may treat Westerners like celebrities and want pictures.  Up until this point, we got a few stares, but not much else.  The zoo however is a popular destination for people outside of Beijing and many of them don’t often see Westerners.  People stared at us as we walked by, we got lots of smiles, and some people asked to take pictures of the girls.  Both our girls were patient and took pictures with other children, some that were equally reluctant.  It was a bit unusual that first time to get so much attention because we are Western, but we have become accustomed to it over time.

Here’s a small gallery of some of the highlights of the zoo. Click any photo for a larger view.
